Checking Out Tools

Who can check out tools?

Anyone with a valid Tool Library membership can borrow an unlimited number of tools! You can sign up as a new member or renew your existing membership.

  • Stop by the St. John’s Tool Library at 151 Empire Ave. St. John’s.

    • Parking and entrance is accessible on Bonaventure Ave.

When entering the library, we ask that all members remain in the front of the room and allow the front desk volunteer to collect your reserved tools.

How do reservations work?

You can either make a reservation through our inventory page using your MyTurn account, call us during open hours, or come by and browse our selection.

Are there extra fees for batteries, blades, and abrasives?

Yes, we charge small fees for certain tools or components that wear down over time.

  • $3 for battery/blade tools.

  • $5 for large tools.

Please note that other fees or purchases (e.g. drill bits, sanding discs, etc.) may be required for some tools. These are conveniently available at the Tool Library for small fees.

Do you have other one-use materials?

Yes, we charge minimal late fees. Only open days (Tuesdays & Saturdays) count as late days. Our Maker members can always renew tools once per loan period.

  • $2/day for hand tools.

  • $5/day for battery/blade tools, or set of tools.

During the Lending Period

Can I renew my tools?

The Maker membership includes one renewal for tools loaned during a rental period, unless another member has reserved the tool in the meantime. Because of this, we recommend you renew as soon as possible if it will be necessary!

Our Tinkerer membership does not include renewals.

What if I have a problem with a tool?

If a tool is giving you trouble, there’s a missing part, or you find damage do not keep using it! Bring it back in, and we’ll replace it for you. Our volunteers can help troubleshoot issues, potentially replace parts or make small repairs.

Checking Tools In

Should I clean my tools before returning them?

Yes please! Returning your tools in good working condition helps us keep turn-around times as short as possible. This means: removing dirt and debris from your lawn tools, emptying your shop-vac, emptying your saw dust bag, wrapping your extension cords, and organizing your bits.

If possible, please also sanitize your tools before returning them to the tool library. Recommended ways to sanitize tools can be found here.

Are there late fees?

Late fees are accrued per item, each day we are open (Tuesdays & Saturdays) and the overdue tool(s) are not returned. All late fees must be paid in full before you can borrow additional tools. We do reserve the right to forgive fees due to special circumstances.

Our late fees are charged as follows:

  • $5.00 CAD per tool per day for power tools.

  • $2.00 CAD per tool per day for hand tools.

Late fees are capped at the full replacement value of each tool, plus a $7.00 administrative fee per tool.

If you have an overdue tool and are not feeling well, please contact us and we will be in touch.
